How to innovate new teaching methods while not abandoning the traditional practices

Change is something that is implemented everywhere to get rid of monotonous ways, methods, and techniques. However, adaptability is a stumbling block that is faced by human beings to get adjusted with the new ways of living. It takes a minimum of 7 -14 days for men to get habituated with the new lifestyle and trends. But then a question arises that in the process to incorporate new changes is it a wise decision to abandon the traditional practices. In this article, the main argument I am going to put forth is how scholars can conform to the new educational procedures by retaining the age-old traditional concepts.

This is the most common scenario seen when a consultant or a speaker comes into a school for the conference to talk about the new pedagogical approaches like Project-based learning, genius hour, STEM, flipped classrooms, etc and give emphasis on how these strategies are getting eyeballs in their classrooms. Apparently, they indicate the fact that how we need to abolish the outdated teaching practices and replace them with the current learning trends.

Some of the realities that we often tend to ignore as education providers are teachers are sold out on the new techniques due to which they fail to stick to the conventional methods in their teaching approaches.Top of Form

This doesn’t point out that education should make peace with the old ways of learning. It definitely means that we should strike a balance between both approaches and rule out the possibility to implement two methods simultaneously.

The innovation should keep going on by not discarding the conventional methods of work. Let’s look at some points to innovate without abandoning the conventions

Blend in traditional with new practices: We can give learning an innovative touch by combining it with the traditional practices. For example, project-based learning can be taught using conventional practices and teach students the real-life problems because the real innovation in this learning type is an authentic audience instead of grades to encourage students

Emphasize on the skill, less focus on technology: Do not use technology just for the sake of using it but ensure it teaches transferable skills where students would get a chance to educate themselves about the tech-oriented world using their skills and knowledge. The new mode of learning is definitely focussed on technology but learn to use it to enhance your strengths and skills. For example, it is worthwhile only if video editing software is effective to teach organizational skills and put forth complex ideas. Likewise, if a 3D printer would engage students to conceptualize an idea, then it becomes worth to use it by all means.

Encourage educators to innovate: it is seen that the student’s success depends on the teacher support.  If teachers get a space of their own to contemplate and engage in innovation, they are likely to succeed. It is crucial for administrators to support teachers in their attempt to create and innovate. Teachers needs are to be addressed properly and invest time in online courses for them to provide time for peer-to-peer discussion and collaboration.

Teachers should expand their boundaries and it is only possible when new ideas keep emerging widening the educational sector. However, by infusing traditional knowledge with the newly designed learning system, we could maintain the essence of both method and add substance to global education.
